What is cosmelan®?

Pigmentation concerns are a growing, global issue; they affect more than 90% of adults over the age of 50. Regardless of skin colour, they are a significant issue because of their unattractive appearance and negative psychological and emotional impact, affecting quality of life.

Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by abnormal production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, and is a consequence of uncontrolled, localized overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes, causing irregular skin coloration and dark spots.

Cosmelan depigmenting solution by Mesoestetic, is a professional depigmenting treatment designed to eliminate or reduce dark spots of melanic origin on skin while unifying the skin tone and enhancing skin luminosity. Cosmelan is the world’s best-selling depigmenting treatment.

Cosmelan ® is effective against all types of spots of melanin origin, all types of skins and ethnicities.

Melasma is usually linked to a hormonal component, as it usually appears after pregnancy or due to the use of hormonal therapies, such as contraceptives pills or hormone replacement therapy.
Solar and senile lentigo

Solar and senile lentigo

Solar and senile lentigo are spots related to photoaging, they usually appear with age in areas that have been continuously exposed to the sun, such as the face, décolleté and hands.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are spots appearing after an inflammatory condition, such as scars, acne marks or after cosmetic procedures such as laser.

Freckles are spots of genetic origin with a high sensitivity to sun radiation that darkens them and increase their presence.

The synergistic action of all the method products ensures:

  • Higher depigmenting efficacy
  • Greater comfort during treatment
  • Lower risk of repigmentation

Treatment protocol and its phases

The complete cosmelan treatment includes one session in cabin that performs an intensive depigmentation action and a home regimen to follow by the patient for a melanogenesis regulating action.

How does cosmelan peel treatment work?

Cosmelan Depigmentation Peel how does work

All-in-one treatment to obtain short and long-term results thanks to its dual action: corrective and regulating.

corrective action
It removes the deposits of melanin, a pigment that gives colour to the spot in the outermost skin layers

regulating action
It acts directly in the melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, to control its production and keep hyper pigmentation under control

Treatment Phases

Cosmelan® protocol has four differentiated phases required to reach the target result.
It is a long process where persistence and compliance with the protocol, as indicated, are key to achieve a successful final result.

Cabin intensive depigmentation

Phase 1 what happens during this phase?

The spot fades superficially while renewal of the first skin layers is stimulated, thus

improving its appearance and texture.

how do you remove cosmelan 1 mask?

After the time indicated by the professional, cosmelan 1 mask must be removed by carefully rinsing with warm water. Repeat as many times as necessary until the product is completely eliminated.

what feelings do you expect when removing the mask?

  • 24-48 hours after removing the mask:

The skin is sensitive, tight and can show redness.

  • 48-72 hours after phase 1:

Start of phase 2 and home treatment.

Home continuous depigmentation

Phase 2 what happens during this phase?

48-72 hours after removing the mask, treatment continues!

The corrective action of the method must be completed, regulating overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to the spot. To keep under control the melanocyte, the cell where melanin is produced, we start with the daily application of cosmelan 2 together with melan recovery and melan 130+ pigment control.

what feelings are to be expected?

  • In this phase, you can usually feel itching, burning and notice the skin dryer and tight. The skin can be irritated, sensitised and can start to peel.
  • This is normal, it is part of the process and together with the flacking your spots will begin to fade progressively in a visible manner.

Home Regulation of hyperpigmentation

Phase 3 what happens during this phase?

We continue acting on the origin of the problem: localised overproduction of the pigment. Therefore, we must regulate melanin overproduction, to prevent these spots from reappearing and even out skin tone progressively.

what feelings are to be expected?

  • You will feel your skin more renewed, with a “new” glow and see how any imperfection is reduced… but the treatment has not ended yet!
  • This is key to obtain the best results and keep your skin pigment overproduction controlled. It is important that, despite the good feelings, you do not give up at this point.

Home Control of reappearance

Phase 4 what happens during this phase?

In this phase, recurrence of the spots treated and formation of new spots is prevented, prolonging the result of the method for a longer time, as the susceptibility to developing spots is a potential risk for your skin.

what feelings are to be expected?

  • In this phase you will notice your skin has recovered its hydration levels, has stabilised and looks even and renewed.
  • You are close to obtain the best results, follow the guidelines and do not forget to protect yourself from the sun, which is the main risk factor for repigmentation.

Frequently asked questions on cosmelan®

__Answers From The Experts

Does cosmelan® work with any type of spot?
With cosmelan® we treat all types of spots of melanin origin, that is, spots originating due to melanin overproduction triggered by several factors (hormonal, genetic, post-acne, post-depilation factors, etc.) that worsen due to sun exposure. Therefore, cosmelan® is effective to treat spots such as: melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), solar, senile lentigo and freckles.
What is the best time to usecosmelan®?
cosmelan® can be used at any time of the year, though it is advisable to do it at times when sun exposure is not so intense or prolonged, such as the winter and autumn. In case you live in a hot region or apply the treatment in the summer, you must take greater care and use a very high sunscreen, such as melan 130+ pigment control and avoid completely very intense and prolonged sun exposure.
How long does the treatment last?
The cosmelan® method consists of four phases which are necessary to achieve the target result. Intensive depigmentation in phase 1 and treatment for home use in phases 2, 3 and 4. The total duration of treatment is about 6 months, that can change based on the severity of the case.
How long will it take to see the results? Why should I continue the treatment if the results already seen before completing it?
The most significant change takes place a few weeks after applying the mask in cabin, it improves skin texture and spots decrease noticeably. This can give a misleading feeling of success. During this period melanin has been removed from the outermost skin layers, and therefore we see the spot much more faded and the skin smoother and softer, but the origin of the problem has not been controlled yet. The melanocyte, a cell where melanin is produced, is still uncontrolled and continues to produce pigment (melanin) in excess. To re-educate the melanocyte and control this overproduction, it is important to continue a home treatment with regulating action, so that the cell returns to a normal active state and therefore prevent spots from reappearing.
What happens if I stop applying the home treatment?
If you do not follow the home regimen, you are interrupting the treatment and will therefore not obtain the expected results. Not applying cosmelan 2 depigmenting cream with regulating action involves not regulating the melanocyte and, therefore, a persistent uncontrolled, excessive production of melanin. The spot will reappear as the skin layers are renewed, as melanin migrates to the surface making the spot increasingly evident.

Not using photo protection, melan 130+ pigment control, involves a very high risk that the spot returns, as skin is more sensitive and receptive to external aggressions during the treatment

Can I combine the cosmelan method with other depigmentation treatments?
During at least the first three months of the method, it is not recommended to use any other type of minimally invasive treatment that can cause a skin lesion, as well as peels, microneedling, exfoliations, etc., as it can even cause repigmentation. It is advisable to use soothing and regenerating treatments both in cabin and at home in case it is needed.

In the last months where we reduce the application guidelines of cosmelan 2 only to the night, we can combine it with treatments that help prolong the results, such as melan tran3x concentrate and melan tran3x gel-cream.

Does the treatment make me unable to fulfil my daily life activity normally?
As it is not an invasive treatment, it does not make you unable to fulfill your activities of daily living normally. Caution must be exerted when fulfilling some type of activities during the first days, a skin adaptation period after the cabin treatment. For instance, it is advisable to avoid bathing in swimming pools, prolonged sun exposure and activities that involve excessive sweating.
Can the spots return after the end of treatment?
After an adequate professional treatment, excess pigmentation can be removed visibly. However, it is a dynamic process, where the imbalance forming them can cause their recurrence. Therefore, even if the spots are not seen, it is essential to apply a daily regulatory depigmentation treatment and photo protection throughout the year to prevent repigmentation.
How can I prevent the appearance of spots after the treatment?
In case you are under the effect of any of the triggering factors for the appearance of spots (contraceptives, pregnancy, summer season, post-depilation, post-acne, post-peel, under photosensitising treatment, etc.), a daily treatment routine is essential, combining a depigmentation treatment, such as melan tran3x, with a high photoprotector such as melan 130+ pigment control.
